Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
