Trump's System of Punishment and Favor

Trump's intense desire for retribution has rapidly evolved into a methodical apparatus. Over the year since his election, the leader's fury and caprices have assumed the guise of official policies in a manner reminiscent to earlier dictatorial regimes. Government officials who fail to comply are summarily dismissed and succeeded by devotees. Political officials who question him encounter prosecution, trial and sanctions. Adversaries have been categorized under executive memoranda as “hostile to national interests”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and menaced with prosecution as “terrorists”.

The Justice System Restructured

Every instance involving legal action of Trump's enemies and leniency for loyalists displays its own unique characteristics. But, notwithstanding their specific character, they exemplify examples of what has arisen as a systematic approach. Such incidents are not random. His purge of Department of Justice lawyers and law enforcement officials, accompanied by his installation of devotees in high-level posts, began swiftly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been molded into a regime. DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into ideological agencies under Trump's explicit direction to carry out his demands. Injustice has been rendered normal. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with punishing the leader's alleged enemies than they are with protecting our national security.

Inside the System

The origin of this mechanism has been uncovered in the court filing of several ex- senior law enforcement agents filed in late summer in the US district court in DC against FBI director a senior appointee and top lawyer Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of payback against them for what Defendants considered to be a failure to show adequate devotion”. According to the filing that one official, the former interim leader, describes a discussion in which the director “publicly confessed the impropriety of his behavior”.

The official had tried to shield law enforcement officers from being fired, the lawsuit claims. The director told him that “administration officials” – understood by the official to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to remove all those who they identified as having worked on a law enforcement case against him. The document continues: “He clarified that he had to fire the individuals his leaders told him to fire, because his ability to keep his own job depended on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in investigations involving the President. Patel explained that there was nothing he or him could do to halt these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau tried to place the President in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” After he informed the director he was disregarding the FBI's own internal rules, the director reportedly said “he understood that and he realized the nature of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Widespread Effects

After the director's claimed acknowledgment to him, the Department of Justice and the law enforcement agency have been gutted and repurposed for his system of punishment. Six of the bureau's high-ranking agents were dismissed or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the presidency. Roughly 4,500 lawyers at DoJ have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of seven government attorneys, among them those in the southern district of New York, quit in protest over what they considered as political interference in abandoning the criminal prosecution against the city leader, a political figure, in as a trade for his cooperation with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of migrants. The anti-corruption unit of the department, which manages corruption cases, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been devastated: the majority of its personnel has left. A third of senior leaders at the justice department have resigned. The unit upholding environmental law has seen departures of half its leadership.

Favors and Sanctions

Regarding the mayor's situation, the acting US attorney for the federal division, the official, resigned in objection against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. A key figure, his “enforcement chief,” was present as the enforcer with the mayor on television to state: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in NYC.”. Meanwhile, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the agreement, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a possible pathway to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for crimes committed while in power, granted by the remarkable decision of the conservative on the highest court, thus blocking his legal action over the Capitol riot and preserving his political viability for the presidential race, is the basis on which he stands to defend his loyalists. Given this protection, he has been empowered to authorize misconduct. The impact of the supreme court decision permeates his government and the GOP down to its bones. The legal case has spread.
