This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
