The Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this work could seem closer to a challenging scholarly quiz than a new popular music project from an artist whose last hit featured a global pop icon. Split into 4 different sections and sung in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying classical-tinged work that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently via the prism of different female saints. The end of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone makes the work of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels almost miraculous, with complete praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the scale feel much greater here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her height, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy comes forth brightly during the stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album is that you never exactly know—nor wish to know—where you is going next."

Almost every track concludes in a completely distinct point than how it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity over a delicate symphony before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused work starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Art and Pop

A key balancing act of Lux is straddling the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in English builds on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins upward. This trick gets echoed by a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with pop culture honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried gems that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the guests around the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
