Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
