British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
