Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
